WINTER CONTINUES IN TO LATE MARCH AT WHITEFACE

The view from the gondola today

The calendar may say it’s late March, but it was a nice and wintry day at Whiteface. The mountain has received some snow over the last few days, which has really helped to spruce up the upper mountain. Conditions, while variable from the top of the mountain to the bottom, were pretty good everywhere. I mostly stuck to the gondola this afternoon, but I did wander up to the summit once.

Above mid-mountain, conditions were mostly powder/packed powder with an icy secondary layer in areas. You may have even been able to find some powder stashes in certain places. The snow was slower, but not too grabby like it was yesterday. Below mid-mountain, the snow got increasingly more sloppy as you approached the base, but the snow was nice and soft and skied well.

For my lone trip up to the summit I chose to ski Upper Skyward to Niagara and Victoria. The snow surface on Upper Skyward was kind of flat down the middle and bumpy on the sides. I don’t know if it was groomed that way or what, but it made for a more interesting time. I’d say Upper Skyward was my run of the day. Like yesterday, I found the steeps off Little Whiteface to have some really nice snow. Upper Northway and Mountain Run were probably my favorites, but Essex was pretty good too.

Mid-mountain today

Today was day 70 of the ski season for me. I will not be skiing tomorrow, as I have an appointment in the afternoon, but I plan to be back out there on Friday and then of course on Saturday and Sunday. I’m planning to venture away from Whiteface and maybe ski Stowe or Jay Peak. Both of those mountains have received a fair amount of snow this week and it looks like they could get even more snow this weekend.

Never Quit Skiing,
