(PACKED) POWDER DAY AT WHITEFACE

Upper Thruway.

Today was day 63 of my ski season. It wasn’t a full blown powder day at Whiteface, but they did pick up a few inches of snow overnight. Temperatures down low weren’t too bad, but high up on the mountain they were much colder. Toss in a light breeze and you’ve got yourself a pretty frigid chair lift ride up to the top of the ski area. I skied with Wild Bill this afternoon and we both agreed that a couple of trips up to the summit was enough.

The view from Little Whiteface.

Upper Northway.

Aside from the Little Whiteface double, all of the main lifts were spinning. There were more than 80 runs open today. There wasn’t much of a crowd on the mountain, but at times you’d end up at the gondola and have to wait a cabin or two for a ride, which is no big deal.

Lower McKenzie.

Lower Skyward.

Looking up Cloudspin.

Generally, conditions were packed powder. Some runs had powder on them like Cloudspin, Lower Mckenzie and Lower Skyward. There were a few runs that were firm. I only skied Paron’s Run to access Cloudspin, but it was quite icy up near the top. Upper Northway was also pretty firm, but it was much better than 24 hours ago. I never skied Upper Skyward today and that’s because Cloudspin once again was in incredible shape. Just like yesterday, skiers left along the trees was deep and you could float right through it.

Upper Wilderness.

There were some whales out and about on the mountain. Brookside had a series of them and there were even some on Boreen. Snowmaking continued today on Hoyt’s High and Lookout Below. From a distance, it looks like there’s a lot of snow on these runs now.

I’m not sure if I’ll be skiing tomorrow, but if I do it will be at Whiteface. I’m off next week, which means I’ll be doing a little tour of ski areas. I may ski in Vermont the entire time or I may venture away. Nothing is set in stone.

Never Quit Skiing,
