A JANUARY POWDER DAY AT WHITEFACE

Today was a great powder day at Whiteface. The mountain picked up at least six to eight inches of snow and the afternoon was full of free refills. Not only was there plenty of fresh snow, but it was also very windy and the wind buff was great to ski through.

Heavy snow coming down on Victoria.

Aside from the Lookout Mountain Triple, which was on wind hold, and the Little Whiteface Double, all of the main lifts that usually spin were spinning. They had 77 runs open. For the first time in a few weeks, Cloudspin was officially listed as open. It could be accessed from the Paron’s Run entrance or from Upper Skyward. Blazer’s Bluff, which opened when Lower Skyward did for the season, was also listed as open after a hiatus.

Looking up at Upper Wilderness.

With all of the fresh snow conditions were mostly powder and packed powder, but there were some severely windblown areas on trails like Paron’s Run and Upper Northway. I spent most of my day on Cloudspin, Lower McKenzie, Wilderness and the lower part of the High Country Glades. I never skied Upper Skyward and that’s because Cloudspin was too good.

Cloudspin.

The middle of Cloudspin was exposed rocks and small trees, but skiers left along the edge of the trail was deep powder and it was fantastic. Lower McKenzie was also a lot of fun today. The coverage has improved since yesterday and the bumps were nice and soft.

River Run.

Snowmaking continued on Hoyt’s High and Lookout below, but with snow in the air, and the lift being down, I couldn’t see how much progress had been made on these trails. The snow guns have been cranking out snow on these runs for two or three days now, so I’d imagine they’re starting to get some nice whales on them.

Never quit skiing,

Lincoln
