AN EPIC LATE MARCH POWDER DAY AT JAY PEAK

Since breaking six ribs on February 2 while skiing at Sugarbush, and missing more than six weeks of skiing following that, I’ve been hoping I’d get one more chance at a powder day at Jay Peak this season. The ingredients came together this week and today for that to happen and as usual Jay delivered. It was an epic day at the east’s snowiest ski resort.

Beaver Pond.

When I got to the mountain this morning I ended up parking in a parking lot I’d never seen or been to before known as the ‘Pit’. I then had to take a shuttle to the main ski area. I didn’t realize it at the time, but having to park in this lot meant Jay was very busy. The big crowds were primarily focused around the tram and the Flyer Quad, although all lifts had some form of a line.

The Flyer Quad.

Bonaventure Glade.

The tram is always a no go when there’s a line, but I did wait for the Flyer a few times, as the line moved fast enough that I didn’t mind. However, I found the Bonaventure Quad’s singles line to move pretty fast so I stuck to that lift most of the time. I was so busy enjoying the terrain off the the Flyer and the Bonaventure Quad that I never even made it to the Jet area of the resort. That’s a real bummer, because who doesn’t love Timbuktu?!

Conditions were incredible everywhere on the mountain, but they were best in the trees, which is where I spent my day. I was expecting the fresh snow to be heavy, but it was pretty light and fluffy, allowing your skis to just float right through it. Coverage was great in the trees too. There wasn’t a single glade I skied where I was worried about rocks or anything else.

Poma Line.

My favorites glades of the day were probably Beaver Pond and Andre’s Paradise, Canyonland and North Glade. The snow in these were great and the terrain was fun, as usual. For the first time ever, I skied Buckaroo Bonzai today. This is a short fun glade with some very well spaced trees. I also skied the run Poma Line today for the first time ever. As you can tell by the name, this run is the old lift line for a Poma so it’s pretty narrow and with the fresh snow it was bumped up today.

In six to eight weeks, this ski season will be in the rearview mirror and it’ll start getting hot, humid and gross. Some people like that weather, but I don’t. As the days turn warm, I’ll be dreaming of me skiing through the trees today at Jay, surrounded by tons of snow. I wanted one more powder day there this season and I got it. For that, I’m very thankful.
