A PACKED POWDER DAY AT WHITEFACE

Excelsior.

I didn’t really want to ski today. Since December 1, there’s only been a handful of days that I haven’t skied and today I was feeling mentally and physically tired. I looked at the weather, saw it would be windy Saturday, and decided I needed to go. The snow ended up being worth it. However, I unfortunately left something in the lodge as I was leaving, and that’s left a sour taste in my mouth for the day as a whole. Hopefully, it found its way to lost and found and I’m reunited with it tomorrow!

Victoria.

Upper Wilderness.

It was a quiet Wednesday on the mountain. There were no lines anywhere and all the main lifts, except the Little Whiteface Double, were spinning. There were 59 runs open and the mountain reported two to four inches of fresh snow overnight. Draper’s Drop was closed for racing.

I skied Whiteface yesterday afternoon and a lot of the terrain was pretty firm, but there were some powder stashes mixed in. Today it was mostly packed powder, with some powder stashes mixed in. Even runs that were very firm yesterday, such as Wilderness and Mountain Run, skied well today. Skiers left on both of these trails had some snow to play in.

Lower Wilderness.

Mountain Run.

Lower Thruway.

Paron’s Run, Excelsior and Victoria were all very nice today, especially Victoria. They have a couple of snow guns running on it and that, mixed in with wind-blown powder on skiers left, made for a good time. Yesterday afternoon, the Wilmington Trail had a large patch of ice on it in the the cliff area. That was gone today and I thought the trail skied well from top to bottom.

The Wilmington Trail.

A notable mention for the day is that I skied Cover’s Cut for the first time this season. This connector trail connects Lower Valley and Lower Thruway. A connector trail may not sound exciting, but this is one you don’t want to miss when you’re coming down Lower Valley around mid-mountain with 150 other skiers. Take the hard right and enjoy a few quiet turns down Lower Thruway instead.

Whales on Lower Skyward.

Snowmaking continues on Upper and Lower Skyward and Niagara, although it looks like it may be near the finish line. As mentioned, they had a few snow guns running on Victoria, as well Boreen, Lower Valley and maybe a few other spots on the mountain.
