THE FIRST (SKI) DAY OF 2025
Happy New Year!
2025 got underway at midnight last night. I was awake for the occasion and then I proceeded to stay up until 1 AM. The only problem? I had to work today! If you’ve followed this blog for more than a few posts, you probably know that I work 4 AM to noon during the week. Needless to say, this afternoon I really wanted to take a nice long nap, but that’s not how you get a year off on the right foot. There’s an old saying, that I just made up, that skiing on New Year’s Day gets you one year of good luck. Whether or not that’s true, I don’t know, but I didn’t want to risk not skiing today.
I made my way back to Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake, New York, where I skied yesterday. In yesterday’s blog post, I said I’d be skiing in Vermont today. However, the blackout period for my Whiteface pass ends tomorrow and while I’m planning to ski there, there could be wind issues that send me to Vermont. All this to say, I decided to return to Mount Pisgah and hold off on Vermont, just in case I end up there tomorrow.
If you missed yesterday’s post, Mount Pisgah is a small ski hill owned and operated by the village of Saranac Lake. It has a T-bar, 15 acres of terrain and 329 feet of vertical. Just like Beartown Ski Area, which is a couple of towns over, near Plattsburgh, what Mount Pisgah lacks in size and height, it makes up for in charm.
Not much had changed since I was there yesterday, but the ski area did receive a trace of snow, which made things feel a bit more wintry. It was also busier than yesterday, which I found to be interesting because it was drizzling most of the time I was there, although it did occasionally switch to light snow.
They were spinning the T-Bar with access to one run, which is named White Stag. Coverage is still great where they’ve made snow. Yesterday, the snow surface was on the firm side. Today it was a bit more soft and the skiing was fantastic, aside from the odd sticky spot here and there due to that trace of snow the hill received.
Overall, I had a nice afternoon lapping the T-Bar at Mount Pisgah. If you’re wondering, my half-day ticket was only $17.
Talk to you tomorrow,
Lincoln
