SKIING PACKED POWDER AT WHITEFACE

I got to the mountain pretty late today. Well, late by my own standards. As I’ve said before recently, I work 4 AM to noon and get to the mountain around 1 PM, usually. Today, however, my work ran over and I got to the mountain at about 1:45 PM. I was on the gondola by 2 PM. In total, I missed about an hour of skiing, but that’s okay because this was my 6th day in a row skiing and my legs are starting to feel it. It’s still early in the season, after all!

Today the mountain was spinning the gondola, the Summit Quad and the Face Lift. For the second time this week, I skied with Wild Bill. Wild Bill had been skiing since the morning and let me know there was some terrain closed due to racing. However, when we got to the top of Little Whiteface for my first run of the day, ski patrol was dropping ropes on Essex. It had been closed because the run it empties out onto, Lower Northway, had been closed for racing. Lower Northway was now open and, as a result, so was Essex.

Every run down Essex today was incredible. All week long this trail has been phenomenal. The snow has been soft and powdery every single day and today was no different. There are two other notable trails for the day, though. Victoria once again skied really well. It opened yesterday and skiers left is natural snow mixed with snow from the snow guns. It’s powdery and a blast to ski through. Up top, off the Summit Quad, I really enjoyed Paron’s Run. We only skied it once, but the snow was packed powder and it skied great.

Excelsior was a one-and-done today. The trail was pretty icy from top to bottom by the time I skied it. It’s also covered in whales, which isn’t a big deal, but is noteworthy. Down below mid-mountain, we were once again skiing Boreen to Brookside to the base. Like Excelsior, there were whales on these runs, although they were not quite as large as those on Excelsior. The runs had some icy spots, but overall they skied fine. Wild Bill said the trails skied different from the morning, which saw sticky spots in areas that snow had been made.

As I said at the beginning of this post, my legs are feeling pretty tired right now. The good news is I’m getting a mandatory break tomorrow. I’ve got some personal stuff going on so I won’t be back out on the mountain until Friday. Hopefully, my legs enjoy their time off!

Talk to you Friday,

Lincoln
