ANOTHER WINDY DAY AT WHITEFACE
For the 3rd day in a row, Whiteface dealt with strong winds that caused significant wind holds. When I got to the mountain this afternoon all that was spinning was the carpet, Falcon Flyer and The Notch. All of these lifts are lower mountain lifts out of the Bear Den Learning Center, which is where I parked. The Notch is the only one that offers intermediate terrain, although it’s really primarily still a beginner lift.
There were probably 15 trails open total off these lifts that actually made sense to ski. I found everything open to generally be in good shape. There was some ice here and there, but it was nothing too bad. The beginner run ‘Boreen’ is looking like it could use some TLC around The Notch’s mid-station. It looks thin and there’s also quite a few rocks and pebbles in this area. They’re avoidable, though.
From what I could see, they were making snow on Upper Valley, Lower Boreen and Wilderness. There are whales on Upper Thruway. Danny’s Bridge is now open and Ladie’s Bridge looks like it’s close to being ready. Hopefully we get Cover’s Cut soon, too!
Lastly, and I was randomly thinking about this today, it would be great to see snowmaking installed on River Run. When it’s open it’s another option in a very congested area of the mountain. It’s also a very fun run. You can get a lot of speed coming down it when conditions are good.
Tomorrow I’m taking a half day at work to go ski Jay Peak. I work 4 AM to noon so a half day means I get off at 8 AM. Jay has picked up a lot of snow over the last 10 days and I’m really looking forward to spending time in the glades.
Talk to you tomorrow,
Lincoln
