A SNOWY MONDAY AT WHITEFACE

Today wasn’t a powder day at Whiteface, but there was snow in the air. The mountain probably picked up an inch or two of white gold this afternoon while I was there. This really helped spruce up runs that were firm yesterday.

The top of Wilderness.

The bottom of Wilderness.

This afternoon I skied with Wild Bill. We visited all three peaks that make up Whiteface Ski Area and we skied most of the open terrain. All of the lifts that normally spin were open. There was racing taking place on Lower Thruway and Draper’s Drop so those runs were closed. Everything else that was listed as open was open.

Lower Northway.

Wild Bill really tore it up out there today, but I was less aggressive in my skiing. As I’ve previously mentioned, I hurt my big toe on my left foot in the trees at Jay Peak this past Friday. It’s getting better, but it still hurts so I’ve been taking it easy.

With snow coming down, conditions around the mountain were mostly great. You could find some ice here and there, but it was nothing too bad. It was a very dry snow and I guess I need wax, because I was moving slow through it at times. The snow on Wilderness, Mountain Run, Upper Thruway and Paron’s Run really stood out to me. Of that group, skiers right on Wilderness was probably the best, but they were all fun.

Wild Bill on Upper Thruway.

Visibility was low on Paron’s Run.

John’s Bypass.

Unlike yesterday, the snow on Victoria is no longer sticky. The Wilmington Trail was good in spots and icy in others. Approach was once again pretty blah. It’s been that way for a few days. There are whales on various trails around the mountain. We found the whales on Lower Boreen to be a lot of fun and we skied that run multiple times as a result.

Snowmaking on Lower Skyward.

They’re still making snow on Upper and Lower Skyward, Niagara and Cover’s Cut (officially Burton’s Cut). They’re no longer making snow on Victoria. For those not familiar with Whiteface, Skyward is the mountain’s best run. It’s steep, fast and it was the start of the women’s downhill during the 1980 winter games. Given the forecasted temperatures, I think there’s probably a 100% chance that run is open for the upcoming holiday weekend.

Talk to you tomorrow,

Lincoln
