A SNOWY DAY AT WHITEFACE

Today was my 25th day of the ski season. It’s looking like I’ll wrap this month up with more than 30 days total on the season. That’s a great start to the winter! Today I once again skied at Whiteface. It was my last day there until January, as I’m blacked out through the holiday period. I’m planning to ski in Vermont over the days leading up to Christmas.

Today the mountain was spinning the Summit Quad, Face Lift, Falcon Flyer, The Notch and the gondola. The gondola was running slower than usual and closed early, which was planned, to address some sort of issue. Yesterday, the mountain had its fair share of icy spots. Thanks to an overnight groom and some fresh snow in the air, those spots weren't too bad today and the mountain overall skied pretty good.

We were able to ski Approach to Calamity Lane today, which was closed yesterday due to racing on Draper’s Drop. All of the whales on this stretch of terrain have been groomed out and I found some decent snow on Mountain Run and Thruway, but if you skied right down the middle of these trails you may disagree with me. There were other trails where the edges had lots of snow that was fun to play in as well. The lower part of Essex was really good, as was skiers left on Victoria. I even thought Excelsior was nice today.

Whiteface’s snowmaking efforts are centered around Lookout Mountain and getting The Wilmington Trail open. They’ve never had all three peaks open before Christmas, but it appears that will likely happen this season. Not only has the weather mostly cooperated, but the mountain has seen significant investment in its snowmaking system and it shows. Preparation meets opportunity.

Like I said, I won’t be skiing at Whiteface tomorrow…or any time soon. Tomorrow I think I’ll be at Jay Peak, but it’s subject to change. It’s a game time decision!

Talk to you tomorrow,

Lincoln
