A NICE DAY OF SKIING AT TITUS MOUNTAIN
Today was a nice day of skiing. The snow was good, there was plenty of terrain open and I was once again skiing with my friend Pro Skier Darren White. That’s all a winning combo. It was my first day at Titus Mountain this season. This ski area is located in northern New York, near the Canadian border. I live about 50 miles east of the mountain. I usually ski here a few times each winter. Titus is where I actually first skied trees. That first time has now developed into somewhat of a passion, even though I’m still not very good at tree skiing.
Titus Mountain is a ski area that you can just tell is well run. For reference, it was once voted the #1 family friendly ski area in North America. You don’t earn a title like that by coincidence. The mountain has three peaks, 8 lifts, 53 trails and more than 1,200 ft. of vertical.
With it being a holiday period, it was a busy day. However, while there was regularly a short line at the lifts, the slopes themselves were not very crowded and I didn’t actually find people to be an issue at all. All of the main lifts were spinning and they had all three peaks open, adding up to 46 runs (of 53) open. Those runs included glade terrain and ungroomed trails.
The snow quality was fantastic. There was packed powder everywhere. Coverage on all of the non-glade trails was pretty good, even on those with natural snow only, such as David’s Delight, which is the lift line run on the Upper Mountain. You could find some thin cover in a small spot or two, but it wasn’t rocky. The glades were a bit thinner then than the trails themselves and so I mostly stayed out of them, although I did ski a couple of glades. While they may have been thin cover, they were definitely skiable. I personally love that they were open. Give people the choice.
We wrapped up the day by skiing some of the terrain off the lower mountain lifts and I really enjoyed some of the runs in this area, which is called Moon Valley. We skied multiple trails that were fast on this part of this mountain, including Sunset, Whistler and Rock Garden, and it was a nice change of pace. I think this might actually be the steepest part of the ski area.
Overall, it was an excellent day of skiing at Titus Mountain. Tomorrow I’m headed to Jay Peak to ski some trees. Pro Skier Darren White may be there as well.
Talk to you tomorrow,
Lincoln
