A MILD AND WINDY DAY OF SKIING AT WHITEFACE

Admittedly, I didn’t want to go ski today. I’m on a 12-day streak of skiing and, since Black Friday, I’ve skied 17 of 18 days. I'm tired mentally and physically and could use a break. However, that break is coming tomorrow as I can’t ski for personal reasons, so I decided I’d ski today. It’s never a bad idea to go skiing, after all.

It was a mild and windy day at Whiteface. Temperatures were in the 40s and you could tell. It felt warm with all of my ski gear on. There was a wind advisory out for Whiteface and the winds were indeed roaring. Unfortunately, that mean the Summit Quad wasn’t spinning, but they were able to keep the gondola open. On top of that, they were still spinning the Face Lift, Falcon Flyer and The Notch. The mountain was empty today so there were no lines.

With the mild temperatures, the snow was nice and soft. It was very carve-able and surprisingly not too bumped up, given the weather. Everything off the gondola skied well. Victoria was the best it’s been in days. The last time I skied it, the trail was frozen solid! Not today. Excelsior was nice and soft, as was Essex, which is starting to get thin in spots. It was finally groomed, though.

Approach opened on Sunday with access to Mountain Run, Upper Thruway and Draper’s Drop. In my post for Sunday I noted how this was covered in whales, some of which were sticky. That was not the case today. Mountain Run and Upper Thruway were still covered in whales, but the snow felt great. Draper’s Drop is the run used for racing at Whiteface and it has been groomed, presumably so the racers can get on it ASAP. Overall, this string of trails skied well.

Despite not wanting to all morning, I’m glad I headed out to Whiteface to ski today. I had a good time. The snow was nice and soft and the mountain was empty. It’s hard to beat that. Like I said, I can’t ski tomorrow so there will be no post. I’ll be back out on the mountain Thursday.

Talk to you then,

Lincoln
