PICO SUCKS, TELL YOUR FRIENDS

I’ve driven by Pico Mountain more than a handful of times en route to Killington Ski Resort. I’ve always looked at it and wondered what it was like. Today, I finally found out. This place sucks. Don’t go there and tell your friends not to go there, either. Killington is a much better place to spend your ski days!

The sign at the entrance of the resort.

Pro Skier Darren White showed why he’s the East’s most decorated athlete today.

TV Matt put on a clinic out there today!

Of course, I’m being facetious. Pico Mountain is awesome! It was my first time ever skiing there and I’m glad I finally made it happen. Today I skied with Pro Skier Darren White, as well as many other people I’ve never skied with before, such as TV Matt, who’s named so because he’s a meteorologist who works on TV. I also finally met the Albas of Alba Adventures, as well as James. Shout out to the Albas, and especially James, for showing us around the mountain.

Pico had five of seven lifts spinning today, providing access to 56 of 60 trails. The mountain has 1,967 ft. of vertical and that’s a true vertical. You can ski the full amount top to bottom. We stuck to the two high-speed quads today and also rode a double for a few runs.

A lot of the trails that were open were natural-snow only. Coverage was overall good, but you definitely had to pay attention on most of the natural snow runs to avoid rocks, etc. On most trails the snow was packed powder, although there were some powder stashes here and there. On trails with bumps, the bumps were generally fairly firm, with some powder snow mixed in between. Where snow has been made, coverage was excellent and the snow was also packed powder.

The Birch Glades.

My favorite runs of the day were the Summit Glade, which runs from the top of the mountain back down to the Summit Express Quad, as well as the Birch Glades. While these runs have ‘glade’ in the name, they’re more so trails with trees on them. Think Kokomo at Jay Peak. I love trails like this!

The Summit Glade.

The coverage on Summit Glade was fine, but it became a bit more rough as you went down the mountain. The trail was mostly bumped up and there were areas where coverage was thin, but it was definetly still skiable. The coverage on Birch Glades was excellent. I really enjoyed this run. Weaving in and out of the trails was a blast!

An open, but thin glade off the Outpost Double Chair.

The trails we skied off the Outpost Double Chair were all pretty thin. Bronco and Wrangler had the best coverage and they were really fun runs. This pod of the mountain was very quiet. I bet during a powder day this area is epic!

Today was day 39 for me. Tomorrow is a Monday, which means I’ll be skiing at Whiteface after work.
